Mixed marriage in Morocco: the papers and steps

Last checked 24 October 2026

In short

If you are Moroccan, even with another nationality, the Family Code applies to you. For a mixed marriage there are two routes: before adouls (in Morocco or at a consulate) with the judge's authorisation, or a civil marriage abroad, lodged with the consulate within 3 months.

Step by step

  1. Choose your route

Before adouls: in Morocco or at a consulate, with the family judge's authorisation. Civil marriage abroad: before the authorities where you live, then registered with the consulate. If you also hold that country's nationality, the consulate asks you to marry there in a civil ceremony first.

  2. Gather the papers

Consulate, civil registry and the foreign spouse's country

The list above is the consulate's for a marriage before adouls (notary-witnesses for family deeds). In Morocco, the mixed-marriage circular adds for the foreign spouse: a nationality certificate, criminal record, proof of occupation and income, a passport copy with the entry page, and 4 photos. Start with the papers from abroad: they take longest.

  3. The judge's authorisation and the contract

    Family section, or the consulate

Marrying a foreign national, or someone who has converted to Islam, requires the family judge's authorisation (article 65). Two adouls then draw up the contract. A civil marriage abroad is celebrated by the local authorities.

  4. Lodging it with the consulate

Consulate of your place of residence or of the marriage

After a civil marriage abroad, lodge a copy with the consulate within 3 months (article 15). Where there is no consulate, send it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The consulate asks for birth certificates, a full copy of the marriage certificate translated into Arabic and legalised if it is in neither Arabic nor French, and copies of IDs and passports.

  5. Registration in Moroccan civil status

The ministry sends the certificate to the civil registrar and the family section of each spouse's place of birth, or to Rabat if one of them was not born in Morocco (article 15). For a marriage before adouls in Morocco, the extract goes out within 15 days of court approval (article 68).

Mixed marriage papers: practical tips

  • Ask the consulate or the adoul for their list before you start collecting: theirs is the one that counts.
  • Foreign documents in neither Arabic nor French must be translated into Arabic and legalised. Give them to the translator all at once.
  • Check that names and dates of birth match across the Moroccan and foreign papers.
  • The usual Moroccan papers (birth record, administrative certificate) are explained in marriage papers in Morocco.

Children of a mixed marriage

A child who is Moroccan through their mother may declare to the Minister of Justice, between 18 and 20, that they keep only one parent's nationality (Nationality Code, article 19).

What does it cost?

No official source publishes consular fees or adoul fees, so we give no figures. Ask for a price before you start.

If you'd like a translator or an adoul in your city to help with the file, you can find them on Hdaya.

Questions people ask

I have two nationalities. Does the Family Code apply to me?

Yes. It applies to all Moroccans, including those who hold another nationality (article 2). Moroccan nationality is only lost by a decree authorising its renunciation (Nationality Code, article 19).

I married at the town hall abroad. What now?

Lodge a copy of the certificate with the consulate within 3 months of the wedding (article 15).

My civil certificate doesn't mention two Muslim witnesses. What do I do?

The consulate's adouls draw up a supplementary act, the «Ishhad Moulhaq», attached to the certificate before it is sent on.

Can a Muslim woman marry a non-Muslim man?

The Family Code treats it as a temporary impediment (article 39). The consulate asks for a certificate of conversion to Islam for a non-Muslim husband before registering the marriage.
