Back pain: should I see a doctor or a physio?

Last checked 24 October 2026

This is guidance, not a diagnosis or treatment, and it contains no exercises or medicines. If back pain comes with a warning sign, go to the nearest emergency room.

In short

Most back pain gets better within a few weeks, but some signs can't wait. Start with a GP or a health centre: they decide whether you need a physiotherapist or a specialist.

Step by step

  1. Describe the pain

    At home, before the appointment

Write down when the pain started, whether it's worse at night or when you move, and whether there's numbness or weakness. Back pain can come from a tight muscle or other causes, and it's the doctor who works out why. Bring old test results if you have them.

  2. See a GP

Health centre or a GP's practice

On the public route, you start at the health centre or with a GP. The doctor looks at your symptoms and decides whether you need a specialist. An X-ray isn't needed for every new back pain without warning signs: the doctor decides.

  3. With a warning sign, don't wait

    The nearest emergency room

If the pain comes with any sign from the red list, go to the emergency room. If you're not fit to drive, don't: call someone to take you.

  4. Where does a physio fit in?

With a physiotherapist, after seeing the doctor

A physiotherapist (called a kiné in Morocco) specialises in rehabilitation and works within the rules of the profession. Ask the doctor whether you need a prescription to see one, and roughly how many sessions to expect.

  5. If the pain lasts, go back to the doctor

The GP, then a specialist if needed

If the pain hasn't improved after a few weeks, stops you living normally, gets worse at night or comes with other symptoms, go back to the doctor. They may refer you to a rheumatologist, a rehabilitation doctor or another specialist.

Don't wait: go to the emergency room if…

  • You have numbness or weakness in both legs
  • You've lost feeling around your genitals or bottom
  • You find it hard to pee, or can't control your bladder or bowels
  • The pain started after a serious accident
  • The back pain comes with chest pain
  • You have a fever, or you're getting worse quickly with severe pain

Where to start

Health centre or GP

Start at the health centre or with a GP, and bring the sheet where you described the pain. The doctor refers you to a physio or a specialist depending on your case.

Back pain: what to ask the doctor and the physio

The sheet where you described the pain saves time, for you and the doctor. At the appointment you can ask:

  • Do I need a test, or can I wait?
  • Should I see a physio, and do I need a prescription from you?
  • Which signs mean I should come back quickly?
  • At the physio: roughly how many sessions, and how long is each one?

When the pain drags on and wears you down

Pain that lasts can tire the mind too. If you feel stress or anxiety is taking over, see who to see for stress and anxiety.

Questions people ask

Do I need an X-ray or a scan of my back?

Not always. For new pain without warning signs, the doctor decides based on your case.

How long does back pain last?

Most cases improve within a few weeks, but the pain can last longer or come back. If it isn't improving or a sign worries you, see a doctor.

Can I go straight to a physio?

It depends on the case. Start with a GP or the health centre, and ask whether you need a prescription before the physio.

Does AMO cover physiotherapy?

Rehabilitation is among the care covered by AMO (Morocco's public health insurance). For how many sessions are reimbursed and whether you need prior approval, ask your fund before you start.
