Renewing your CNIE or passport in Morocco: documents and steps
Last checked 24 October 2026
This is an orientation guide, not an administrative decision or a promise of an appointment or processing time. Documents, fees and procedures vary by document, situation and office; check the official source and competent consulate before you go.
In short
Your Moroccan identity card and passport follow different procedures. This guide separates the routes in Morocco and through a consulate for MREs, without promising an appointment or fixed processing time.
Before your appointment
Step by step
-
Identify the document first
Before gathering papers
The electronic national identity card (CNIE) and passport are different documents with different procedures. If the reason is loss, theft, an address change or another personal-data change, prepare the document that explains your situation. One checklist does not fit every case.
-
If you live in Morocco, start with the competent office
At the administrative annex or caïdat, depending on the service
The official passport portal directs residents in Morocco to the administrative annex or caïdat for their place of residence, or their place of stay when they cannot prove a fixed residence. For the CNIE, follow the instructions of the competent identity-card service. Check the current list before travelling.
-
If you are an MRE, ask your consulate
At the Moroccan consulate or embassy
Moroccans residing abroad submit passport applications to the Moroccan consulate or embassy responsible for them, and CNIE requests also follow the competent consular route. Check whether an appointment is required and whether the service is for an MRE or a Moroccan visitor. Do not rely on an old social-media checklist.
-
Build the file for your situation
At home, before the appointment
Prepare the form, a valid CNIE when required, photos, the old document and any declaration or supporting paper for your case. For passport renewal, the official portal lists the old passport or proof of what happened to it; loss or theft requires a declaration to the competent authority. Consulates may request originals and copies, so check their current list.
-
Attend and keep your proof
On the filing day
Personal attendance is required for many of these services, with specific arrangements for minors and people under legal guardianship. Bring the appointment confirmation, originals, copies and photos, and keep the receipt. Do not rely on a fixed processing time: it depends on the service, office and file.
-
Track the request and check the document
After filing and at collection
Keep the receipt or tracking number safely. When the document is ready, check your name, date of birth and other personal details before leaving, and report an error immediately. In a passport renewal, the old passport is cancelled under the official procedure; do not assume both remain usable.
The official route
Official CNIE and passport procedures
Start with the Moroccan passport portal and the Moroccan consular website, choosing the page that matches your situation in Morocco or abroad. The current official checklist is the reference—not an old post or someone else’s experience.

Add your profileTwo documents, two routes
It is easy to mix up the CNIE and passport until you are standing at the counter. Start with one simple question: which document do you need? Then check who receives that application.
MRE? Start with your consulate
If you live abroad, do not build your file from a relative’s experience in another city. Your responsible consulate can tell you whether you need an appointment, what to bring and whether the service is for MREs or visitors. That is the route that saves the most back-and-forth.
Hdaya helps you make the route clearer
Official information comes first. Nearby providers may help with photos, translation or organising a file, depending on the service. No provider can guarantee acceptance or speed up an official authority.
Questions people ask
Do the CNIE and passport need the same documents?
No. They are different documents with different procedures. Identify the service first, then follow its current official checklist.
Where do I file a passport application if I live in Morocco?
The official portal directs residents to the administrative annex or caïdat for their residence, or their place of stay when they cannot prove a fixed residence. Check the portal before going.
I am an MRE visiting Morocco. Should I go to a consulate or a local office?
There is no single answer for every situation. The route can depend on whether you reside abroad and whether you can prove a place of residence in Morocco. Ask the official office before booking.
What if my passport is lost?
Report the loss or theft to the competent authority where it happened and obtain the declaration, including the passport number when known. Then follow the checklist for the office receiving your application.
Do I have to attend in person?
The official passport portal requires personal attendance for passport applications, with a legal representative arrangement for minors. For CNIE services, follow the receiving authority’s instructions.
Does Hdaya guarantee an appointment or faster processing?
No. Hdaya brings useful information and nearby help closer, but appointment availability, acceptance and processing remain with the official authority.
