Lawyers in Morocco: when to see one and what they do

Last checked 24 October 2026

This is general information to point you in the right direction, not legal advice or an endorsement of any lawyer. Rules change and every case is different, so talk to a lawyer before you act.

In short

A summons, a dispute, a contract you don't understand before signing: that's when to see a lawyer. A lawyer advises you, represents and defends you, and follows procedures at court and with the public prosecutor. The best time to go is before a deadline gets close.

Step by step

  1. Go before the problem grows

Before a claim, a reply or a signature

A summons, a dispute, a contract you want to understand, a complaint, an administrative procedure or a company project: don't wait until the deadline has passed. A lawyer will tell you the right route and which papers they need.

  2. Give the facts as they are

    At the first consultation

Put events in date order, gather contracts, summonses and messages, and say clearly what you want and what you don't. The lawyer needs the full picture to judge jurisdiction, stage and risks. Don't hold anything back, even if it doesn't help your case.

  3. Know what the work covers

    Before you commit

Law 66.23 lists pleading, representation, defence and assistance, steps at court registries and the public prosecutor's office, plus consultations, studies, mediation, arbitration and other legal tasks (article 33). Ask: is this a one-off opinion, a single stage or the whole case?

  4. Put the mandate, stage and fees in writing

    Before work starts

The written engagement sets out the matter, the stage the lawyer will handle, the key information and how fees and expenses will be paid (article 54). Read it carefully, keep a copy and ask what isn't included.

  5. Check the lawyer and keep contact clear

    Throughout the case

Check the lawyer in the Ministry of Justice's national directory of legal and judicial professions. Agree on how you'll stay in touch, which papers are needed and the deadlines. No lawyer can guarantee the outcome, but they can explain the route, your options and the limits of the mandate.

Lawyer, notary or adoul?

  • Lawyer: for a dispute, a summons, a court case, or a contract you want to understand before signing.
  • Notary: for authentic deeds governed by the notarial law.
  • Adoul: for adoulaire deeds, such as marriage or inheritance.

For a divorce, see also divorce papers. If you're starting a business, see setting up a SARL in Morocco.

Fees

We found no recent official source publishing a standard lawyer's fee, so we give no figures. Fees are written into the engagement before work starts (article 54).

Questions people ask

When should I see a lawyer?

Before you bring a claim or reply to one, as soon as you get a summons, and before you sign an important contract or get into a dispute. Even if you don't know yet whether it will go to court, early advice makes the route and deadline clear.

What can a lawyer do for me?

Under article 33 of Law 66.23, a lawyer pleads, represents, defends and assists, handles the procedural steps of the case, gives consultations and studies, and conducts mediation, arbitration and other tasks the law allows.

Is a lawyer the same as a notary or an adoul?

No. A lawyer advises, represents and defends. A notary drafts authentic deeds; an adoul (notary-witness for family and civil deeds) writes adoulaire deeds. Your case decides who you need.

How do I agree fees with a lawyer?

Ask for a written engagement covering the matter, the stage, how you'll pay and the expenses. We found no recent official source publishing a standard fee, and no outcome is ever guaranteed.
