From the floor, without touching anything risky
Photograph the area from a distance and note whether it gets worse after rain or after a nearby pipe is used. Stay away from wet electrics, and don't scrape the paint before the maâlem (tradesman) has seen it.
With a painter or plasterer
Damp can bring mould, damage the wall and make paint peel. Painting over a damp or mouldy wall doesn't fix the cause: find where the water comes from first.
During the visit
A large crack, a bubble that keeps coming back, a leak or water near electrics needs the right professional, not just a painter. Ask whether the problem is in the wall's surface or in the building.
Before work starts
Ask for the likely cause, what the inspection and repair include, and what happens if the damp comes back. And ask to see photos of a similar job they have done.
